Live Talks LA Presents Martin Short In Conversation with Steve Martin

November 9, 2014 @ 7:30 pm

Martin Short, Emmy and Tony award-winning Canadian-born actor and comic, is adored for his work on SCTV and Saturday Night Live, in such great comic movies as Three Amigos! and Father of the Bride, and in memorable talk show, prime-time and theatrical appearances from Damages to his one-man Broadway hit Martin Short: Fame Becomes Me.

Short’s memoir, I Must Say: My Life As A Humble Comedy Legend, tells how a showbiz-obsessed kid from Canada transformed himself into one of Hollywood’s favorite funny men – a hilarious, occasionally heart-breaking ride through his life and times from his early years in Toronto as a member of fabled improvisational troupe Second City to Saturday Night Live to memorable movie roles. He reveals how he created his most indelible comedic characters, among them manic man-child Ed Grimley, slimy corporate lawyer Nathan Thurm, and bizarrely insensitive interviewer Jiminy Glick. Throughout, Short freely shares the spotlight with friends, colleagues, and collaborators, including Steve Martin, Tom Hanks, Gilda Radner, Mel Brooks, Nora Ephron, Eugene Levy, Catherine O’Hara, Paul Shaffer and David Letterman.

But there is another side to Short’s life that he has long kept private. He lost his eldest brother and both his parents by the time he turned twenty and, more recently, he lost his wife of thirty years to cancer. In I Must Say, Short talks for the first time about the pain those losses inflicted and the upbeat life philosophy that has kept him resilient and carried him through.

We welcome Steve Martin back to Live Talks Los Angeles. He interviewed Tina Fey when her book Bossypants was released. As an actor, comedian, author, playwright, screenwriter, producer and musician, Steve Martin is one of the most diversified performers and acclaimed artists of his generation. With a list of credits too numerous to mention, Martin has been successful as a writer of and performer in some of the most popular movies of recent film history – appearing in more than 50 films over the course of his career. As a compadre of Martin Short’s in The Three Amigos, he’s the perfect person to lead this conversation.
