Eater LA: 28 Classic Restaurants Every Angeleno Must Try, Summer 2017

Throwback to LA’s best old school eateries and dives

by Matthew Kang and Farley Elliott

With all the recent influx of new culinary offerings to Los Angeles, it’s easy to lose sight of one simple fact: This is a city that has been firing on all dining cylinders for a very long time. Los Angeles helped changed the fast food and Mexican cuisine scene in the entire country half a century ago, but long before then places around the city were working up French dips, Italian sandwiches, and big steaks to hordes of hungry customers. Thankfully many of the best old school places still serve the same, but to a new generation of diner eager for nostalgia as much as what’s on the plate. Here are some of the best classic restaurants to add to any LA dining itinerary.

#20 Damon’s Steak House

A total time capsule set in the heart of Glendale, this Tiki-themed steakhouse along Brand Blvd has been serving reliable steaks and strong drinks since 1937, though it moved to this location back in 1980. The mai tai and prime rib are popular orders.
